He's doing the best that he can. That's all I can really ask of him anymore - just to live his life.
[Something in what Merriment says makes Guy's light tone catch, a pause that barely betrays a shift of mood.
And then he's laughing, easy, simple, shrugging it off... and not addressing it. It's fine.]
Hahah - well, I mean, I watched over him for long enough. It's hard not to want to make sure he's okay out of habit, you know? Besides, he tries not to treat me like a servant anymore.
I don't mind either way. He may not be my master anymore, but I'll still serve as his friend.
[Ah.] Probably not my place to talk, huh? I've never had experience with that kind of thing...[Shut up, Merriment.] There's a couple of you who showed up here with people from home. It's kind of interesting to think about.
[And hopefully it means people will keep each other safe.] They seem happy with you though.
[Not only Luke, but Justice, too. He can't say too much about the relationship between Guy and Luke because he hasn't looked that much, but...why wouldn't they be okay?]
You think so, huh? I can't really promise it will be anything one way or the other. All I really can do is step in and try to help make things a little easier.
[Even if he wasn't the servant anymore. Even if it made him the doormat or the soft heart or the mother hen. It just felt right.
...]
Still. It can be kind of a double-edged sword when it comes to people you really care about. It's nice to have them around, to be there for them and have familiar company for yourself, but...
Well, given the situation we're in, I guess you can't help but wish that they could be spared from the burden of it.
[He shrugs halfheartedly, looking back at the picture.]
It doesn't change that they're still here, though. Kids or adults, they still have to deal with it.
I do. But maybe that's just because when we started the pantheon none of us knew each other either. [Which is maybe half the problem.] Maybe it would've been easier if everybody thought like you do, but you can see how clashing personalities...well. Clashed.
[There's a tilt of the head though.] ...this whole game's sort of that way. You guys agreed to be here, but I'm starting to wonder if all of you understood what you were agreeing to. I'm not even sure why we reached out to so many kids, but this has been kind of rough on everybody. It's sort of why I created this place. [A wave to the game room.] It doesn't change what's happening, but sometimes a distraction's good enough.
Likewise. I imagine you probably saw how many times Luke and I crashed in here a couple weeks ago. I couldn't get him away from the video games.
...Anyway. Don't worry about it. Like I said before, the last thing a kid his age needs is to be left with regrets. And it's... [A strong pause, obviously rewording what he was going to say.]
I'm aware the whole situation with Ava was a more delicate topic with him than I originally thought. I'm just glad he felt he could trust me to bring things up.

Yeah, I kind of track who comes in and out of here and add stuff as I feel like it. [It's nice to know people can still have some fun anyway.] But you're right. It's sort of how I feel about most of the kids in this place.
[He's continue, but Guy says something that's interesting and there's a lingering pause.] ...did...you see him? [Like. Without his mask, he means.]
Thanks. He's...he gets nervous about that kind of thing. Thinks people will be afraid of him if they see him. I'm kind of impressed he did it on his own.
[But Merriment shakes his head.] But you came back because I owe you something, don't I?
I think so, too. [It's a softer tone, but Merriment straightens up after that.]
I don't go back on that kind of thing, Guy. It's not really my style or what I'm trying to do these days...but what do you want? It has to be something small, but I can make it work. [There's a hum then.] I can also issue an IOU.
If you don't have a favor in mind right away, you can come back and cash in when you think of it. I can't do anything like saving someone for that price, but maybe an item, maybe a tactic. Something like that.
Sure. Take all the time you want, it's not like I'm going anywhere. [Probably.] Just remember it's bound to be a smaller scale, but helpful sort of thing.

Just a couple days ago, and only because he insisted.
You have my word. I won't tell a soul.

[He hesitates at Merriment's question, before giving a nod.]
More out of curiosity, really. I know he's important to you. If you've changed your mind, then don't worry about it. I'm just glad I was able to help.

What kind of IOU? Just for the same, I take it?

I might hold onto that offer, then, if that's alright. Give me some time to think it over.
I wouldn't want to waste your generosity or anything.
